Western’s Drygoods

The Vs sewn above their shirt
pockets, indicate that the space
above their shoulders
is greater than the contents
of their shirt pockets.
Farm work
for their fathers takes up
their study time.

One is in work cloths. Straw
hat, faded jeans, boots that lay
to the floor like the tiller tractor
he operates.

His wide brimmed straw
hat went down towards the blue
jean wearing butt of some
girl he seemed to know.
When the hat came
back up, the leather tag, 34
waist, 31 height,
was in-between the teeth
of the hat’s occupant,
not to mention a welt
on his cheek.
